​What is a Signalling Engineer?

In a rail environment, signalling engineering enables operators to regulate the movement of trains on the network with minimum conflict or delay. A signalling engineer will choose to specialise in design, construction, maintenance or project management. 

What are the typical daily duties for a Signalling Engineer?

From employer to employer and project to project the job description of a Signalling Engineer can vary, however typical duties and activities undertaken include:

  • Undertake independent checks of the signalling detail design as per relevant standards and Signalling Design Specifications

  • Performing complex railway signal design tasks to relevant standards, industry codes and practices

  • Interacting with key internal and external stakeholders to achieve optimum outcome

  • Provide functional support and guidance to junior Design staff for all aspects of Signalling Design

  • Assist in the risk assessment of planned and completed designs

This project was Willmott Dixon’s sixth project in Doncaster and will see the delivery of a new Central Library and Museum in Doncaster town centre. This project was estimated to cost £15m and will help support the local and creative economy by providing opportunities for young people and small business owners to develop skills that help build a successful career.
