Principal Mechanical Engineer - Data Centres

Job Description

A leading global consultancy is seeking an experienced Principal Mechanical Engineer to join their Data Centre and Mission Critical team. This role is integral to delivering complex and high-value infrastructure projects across EMEA, with a particular focus on the hyperscale and co-location data centre market.

The successful candidate will act as a technical lead within a multi-disciplinary team, supporting the full project lifecycle while contributing to strategy, standardisation, and best practices across the mechanical discipline.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the mechanical design and delivery of complex data centre projects across the EMEA region.

  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure technical solutions align with project objectives and client requirements.

  • Define and maintain technical standards, quality benchmarks, and best practices for mechanical engineering within the sector.

  • Mentor and support junior engineers, contributing to the upskilling and development of the wider team.

  • Take a hands-on approach to risk management, project planning, and performance monitoring.

  • Represent the business in client meetings, supporting business development and maintaining long-term partnerships.

  • Provide strategic input into the growth of the data centre offering across EMEA and globally.

Candidate Requirements

  • Significant experience delivering mechanical design for data centres or other mission-critical environments.

  • In-depth knowledge of mechanical systems relevant to data centre infrastructure, including HVAC and cooling strategies.

  • Demonstrable client-facing experience, with the ability to provide high-level technical guidance.

  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with CIBSE or a relevant institution, or working towards it.

  • Strong commercial acumen and understanding of project financials.

  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

  • Based in or able to commute to one of the following: London, Manchester, Cardiff, Belfast, or surrounding regions. Hybrid working available.
