What is a Site Manager?
A Site Manager within the construction industry is responsible for overseeing operations of the whole site on a day-to-day basis and that a project comes in on time and in budget. Site Managers sometimes go under the title of Construction Manager, Site Agent or Building Manager. Site Managers are also responsible for taking on staff and preparing the site, including installing temporary offices and facilities before construction work starts.
With larger projects, a Site Manager may be responsible for part of it and would usually report into a Project Manager. During the construction of a project a Site Managers role will be to monitor the progress and report back to the client or client’s representatives, ensure the safety of the team and site workers and troubleshoot any issues that may arise.
What are the typical duties and activities for a Site Manager?
From employer to employer the description of a site manager job will vary, however typical duties and activities undertaken include:
Hiring staff
Maintaining quality control procedures
Ensuring site safety by making safety inspections
Problem solving
Sourcing materials
Checking and preparing reports for clients
Monitoring progress of the project
Liaising with clients or the client’s representatives to update on progress
Keeping staff motivated and focussed
Site Managers typically work 40-50 hours a week, but will sometimes be required to work longer hours during the busiest times.
