Technical Director - Rail Structures & Bridges
A well-established engineering consultancy in Glasgow is looking for a Technical Director with extensive experience in rail and bridge design. The successful candidate will be a Chartered Engineer with a strong background in leading technical teams and overseeing the delivery of complex infrastructure projects. The role will involve acting as Contractor's Responsible Engineer (CRE) on rail projects and providing guidance across a range of schemes, including flood prevention and other civil works.
The key responsibilities for this Technical Director role are:
- Lead, mentor, and provide technical guidance to a growing team of engineers, with a strong focus on chartered engineers and developing the next generation of technical specialists.
- Provide technical leadership on bridge design and rail infrastructure projects, ensuring compliance with all relevant codes, standards, and best practices.
- Act as Contractor's Responsible Engineer (CRE) on rail and bridge projects, overseeing design work, risk assessments, and ensuring safety and quality throughout the project lifecycle.
- Approve and check designs and technical documentation, ensuring accuracy and alignment with client requirements and project specifications.
- Prepare and oversee the preparation of tender documents and manage the tendering process to secure new projects.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients and key stakeholders, leveraging industry contacts to win work and expand the company's portfolio in the rail, bridge, and civil engineering sectors.
- Work across a diverse range of projects including railway networks, bridges, and civil engineering schemes such as flood prevention works, ensuring timely delivery of high-quality technical solutions.
- Ensure technical standards are met and support the team in maintaining and improving project delivery procedures.
- Review, approve, and check designs, calculations, and technical documents to ensure they meet project and regulatory standards.
- Support the professional development of junior and senior engineers through guidance on designs and technical best practices.
- Drive business development efforts by leveraging industry contacts and pursuing new project opportunities.
- Ability to manage multiple projects, budgets, and timelines effectively, ensuring successful delivery within scope and deadlines.
Experience required for this Technical Director role are:
- Chartered Engineer (CEng MICE, MIStructE or equivalent).
- Extensive experience in bridge design and rail infrastructure projects.
- Proven experience acting as CRE on rail projects, with a strong understanding of industry regulations and standards.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage and mentor teams of engineers.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Experience with business development and client management is highly desirable.
- A background in civil engineering projects, particularly flood prevention, is advantageous but not essential.
