Key Responsibilities
- Provide technical direction on emerging trends and changes to maintain resilience in all markets.
- Work collaboratively with the Mechanical Engineering team, as well as teams from the wider DB ESG business to leverage capability for the effective delivery of rolling stock projects. Work closely with clients to understand their requirements and aspirations, to identify and agree scopes of work.
- Shadow and collaborate with our in-house experts to expand expertise in maintenance optimisation and reliability enhancement.
- Lead and deliver engineering projects focused on improving rolling stock maintenance regimes and continued service performance.
- Develop costed proposals - full scope or specific elements of scope for multi-discipline jobs.
- Lead delivery of high-quality work to clients according to agreed scopes, timescales & budgets.
- Provide subject matter expertise in mechanical systems, including areas such as bogies & suspension, wheelsets, bearings, braking systems and performance, HVAC, doors, couplers, and underframe equipment.
- Analyse and enhance maintenance strategies (RCM, LCC analysis, etc.) to optimise asset availability and reduce whole-life cost.
- Identify root causes of mechanical failures and implement robust corrective actions.
- Support the development and implementation of condition-based and predictive maintenance techniques.
- Develop effective technical relationships, and manage engineering interfaces between DB ESG, clients, and third-party suppliers or TOCs/FOCs.
- Deliver technical reports, risk assessments, modification instructions, and maintenance documentation to high standards.
- Responsible for delivery of work packages agreed to other Engineering and Project teams to time, cost and quality
- Provide mentoring and technical leadership to junior engineers within the department.
- Ensure all activities comply with industry standards, safety regulations, and internal quality processes.
- To take responsibility for promoting the company values and contribute to the strategic aims of the business.
- Contribute to the definition of new processes and procedures and development of existing processes and procedures within the Mechanical Engineering team.
- Keep up to date with industry developments including new standards and technology.
- Ensure that technical knowledge and skills are developed and maintained as 'best in class'.
Essential Skills and Experience
- Degree-qualified in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline, or possess equivalent, significant industry experience. Significant post-graduate experience in rolling stock engineering, particularly in maintenance and operations support.
- Proven track record of delivering maintenance improvement projects or reliability enhancement programmes.
- Strong understanding of rolling stock systems and subsystem interactions.
- Familiar with railway industry standards such as BS EN 50126/8/9, RISs, and GMRTs.
- Experience in client-facing roles and confident in presenting technical solutions to both engineering and non-technical stakeholders.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Significant experience of working on multi-disciplined complex engineering projects.
- Proven record of building effective relationships with customers and suppliers.
Production, review and approval of project cost estimating.
Desirable Skills
- Chartered Engineer status or working towards (IMechE or equivalent).
- Experience with digital tools for predictive maintenance (IoT, data analytics, etc.).
- Familiarity with vehicle acceptance, approvals, and safety case preparation.
