Location: Newcastle Upon Tyne

Salary: Negotiable dependant on level of experience plus benefits including:

Summary

The executive body of the North East Combined Authority owning and operating the Tyne and Wear Metro is looking to hire an Operational Safety Manager to join the business to lead, provide expertise and guidance to the operational teams on all aspects of railway and maritime legislation, regulation, and industry standards.
You will support the development and implementation of the' operational safety management system whilst working closely with key stakeholders both internal and external to the organisation.

What does the role entail?

- Contributing towards the development and delivery of the QHSSE Strategy to ensure Nexus' QHSSE objectives are met.
- Acting as a subject matter expert on operational safety, rule/handbooks, rail/maritime industry standards and legislation.
- Overseeing the Operational Safety Business Partner's in the implementation and maintenance of the Nexus Rule Book (and associated material) and other operational standards via the Nexus Rules Review Committee, as well as providing operational safety guidance and support across the Nexus organisation
- Act as a designated competent person, provide support in operational incident investigations, risk assessments, emergency planning, fatigue monitoring, and behavioural safety initiatives
- Undertake operational safety and assurance performance monitoring activities, reporting and analysis, preparing appropriate reports and provide accurate information to the QHSSE Team and other relevant forums as required.
- Conducting analysis to identify emerging trends and in collaboration with stakeholders, develop and implement control actions within operational safety processes
- Ensure all accidents, incidents and close calls are reported and investigated as appropriate and in compliance with Nexus' procedures and statutory requirements (e.g. RIDDOR, RAIB, MAIB).
- Liaison with operational safety regulators and external stakeholders such as the ORR, MCA, RSSB, LRSSB
- Assisting in the development of periodic, topical and informative multimedia communications and operational safety performance improvement campaigns.

Seeking someone with:

- Recognised safety or railway operations qualification such as those through NEBOSH or Institution of Railway Operators (IRO)
- Demonstrable knowledge of railway, maritime or other high-hazard industry safety legislation and regulations.
- Experience of supporting the requirements of relevant operational safety legislation and particularly ROGS and those related to the UK Marine industry.
- Previous work experience in rail operations and/or infrastructure is preferable.

Desirable

- Membership of a relevant professional body: (IOSH, CIRO)
- Educated to degree level.
