Commercial Assistant

A growing rail contractor is looking for a proactive Commercial Assistant to join their team and support day-to-day commercial and financial operations across key infrastructure projects.

This role is ideal for someone with early commercial experience—perhaps through a graduate scheme, placement, or junior QS role—who is ready to take the next step in their career. You’ll work alongside experienced professionals, gaining hands-on exposure to applications for payment, cost reporting, forecasting, and subcontractor management within a fast-paced rail environment.

The key responsibilities for this Commercial Assistant role are:

  • Assist in the preparation and submission of payment applications and supporting documentation to clients.
  • Support the production and maintenance of cost value reconciliations (CVRs).
  • Assist in the monitoring of project costs, including subcontractor spend and internal resource allocation.
  • Help prepare and review financial accounts, project forecasts, and cost reports.
  • Support invoice tracking, query resolution, and reconciliation of accounts with internal finance and operational teams.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date commercial records, including contracts, purchase orders, and variations.
  • Work with commercial managers to track contract changes, assess risk, and ensure alignment with contractual obligations.
  • Assist with procurement activities and the management of subcontractor agreements.
  • Provide administrative and reporting support to ensure commercial deadlines are met.

Experience required for this Commercial Assistant role are:

  • Degree or diploma in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management, Construction Management, Finance, or related field.
  • Some practical experience in a commercial or finance-related role (e.g., placement year, graduate scheme, or 6–12 months’ work).
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and basic financial systems.
  • Excellent numerical, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn.

Desirable knowledge, skills & experience for this Commercial Assistant role are:

  • Experience working in the rail, construction, or civil engineering sector.
  • Understanding of NEC contracts or infrastructure project environments.
