​What is a Structural Technologist?

A Structural Technologist plays a key role in the design, planning, and construction of building projects. A Structural Technologist helps to assess whether building plans and materials are suitable for the project. A Structural Technologist works closely with design teams and architects to ensure the safety of a structure.

What are the typical daily duties for a Structural Technologist?

From employer to employer and project to project the job description of a Structural Technologist can vary, however typical duties and activities undertaken include:

  • Inspecting buildings to assess structural integrity

  • Working with design teams and other professionals on construction plans

  • Using computer modelling simulations to predict how structures will act under varying conditions

Crossrail

Work on the Crossrail began in 2009 and was confirmed in 2014 that the £14.8bn project would extend to Reading. The project is set to be complete in 2019.

Station Hill

This £500m project will see 930,000 sq ft of office space, 150,000 sq ft of retail space and 300 residential units next door to Reading train station, which is the largest in the south east. Permission was granted in 2014 seeing the former dance hall demolished.
