​What is a Structural Technologist?

A Structural Technologist plays a key role in the design, planning, and construction of building projects. A Structural Technologist helps to assess whether building plans and materials are suitable for the project. A Structural Technologist works closely with design teams and architects to ensure the safety of a structure.

What are the typical daily duties for a Structural Technologist?

From employer to employer and project to project the job description of a Structural Technologist can vary, however typical duties and activities undertaken include:

  • Inspecting buildings to assess structural integrity

  • Working with design teams and other professionals on construction plans

  • Developing design ideas usingCAD

  • Using computer modelling simulations to predict how structures will act under varying conditions

  • Providing technical engineering advice

  • Obtaining planning and building regulation approvals.

Carlsberg

Carlsberg built a £20m bottling plant at its brewery in Northampton. The facility, within the Northampton Waterside Enterprise Zone. The company also recently invested £40m to upgrade the capacity and capability of its existing plant.

St John's

New University of Northampton student accommodation was completed at the start of 2014, bringing 460 students into the town centre. The project was promoted by Northampton Borough Council to bring new jobs and investment to the town centre. It is located within the Northampton Waterside Enterprise Zone and is, in conjunction with other projects, helping regenerate that part of Northampton.
