The Role
You'll work closely with the Senior Design Manager and project teams to ensure design outputs are delivered on time, to spec, and aligned with client requirements. You'll manage internal and external design teams across multiple projects and play a key role in coordinating technical delivery from survey through to construction handover.
You will have experience with De-vegetation, Fencing & Heavy Civils
Key responsibilities of the Design Manager:
- Reviewing client remits and ensuring design outputs meet requirements
- Planning and facilitating rail access, surveys, WPPs, and task briefings
- Day-to-day management of internal and external design teams
- Maintaining and updating design trackers and change logs
- Supporting Value Engineering and Efficiency Tracking
- Liaising with project teams to ensure buildability and delivery alignment
- Supporting the Senior Design Manager with programme and cost tracking
- Managing meetings with designers, clients, and internal teams
- Documenting the full design process and identifying scope changes
Experience required for the Design Manager role:
- Strong background in design management within the railway environment
- 5+ years of experience in civil engineering design and coordination
- Comfortable working across multiple projects and engaging with delivery teams
- Strong attention to detail and organisational skills
- Previous experience working to Network Rail standards (preferred)
- Proficient in document control and Microsoft Office systems
To be successful for the Design Manager role:
- Degree-qualified in Civil Engineering (BEng or BSc minimum)
- Chartered or working towards chartership with ICE or equivalent
- Excellent coordination and communication skills
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel
- CSCS card (essential), PTS or other rail-related tickets (desirable)
