Design Manager

A leading construction contractor is seeking an experienced Design Manager to join their dynamic project delivery team. This is a key role with responsibility for managing the design process across all aspects of a major residential or mixed-use development, ensuring quality, coordination, and compliance throughout all project phases.

About the Role:

Reporting directly to the Construction Director, the Design Manager will oversee the daily management of design consultants, ensure design integration with construction activities, and act as a liaison between the client, consultants, and project teams. You'll play a central role in guiding design solutions, managing risk, and contributing to project strategy and delivery.

The key responsibilities for this Design Manager role are:

  • Develop innovative design solutions to client's briefs and contractor's proposals whilst controlling the professional team and subcontractors.
  • Appraise tender documentation to identify risks, gaps, inadequate or incorrect designs and other opportunities.
  • Develop relationships with clients from concept stage onwards; manage expectations of the project through regular communication and discussions regarding requirements and specifications.
  • Manage the relationship for the whole project team - with the client, subcontractors and professional team and resolve any queries.
  • Review the design on an ongoing basis, identify potential interface problems & practicalities in construction, and resolve with the design team and specialist subcontractors where needed.
  • Attend and contribute to design and D&B meetings, upholding a professional company image.
  • Stay current with industry standards, regulations, and innovations.


Experience required for this Design Manager role are:

  • Degree or diploma in Engineering, Architecture, or a related Construction discipline
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in a design management role within the main contracting sector
  • Proven experience with residential or mixed-use developments
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Microsoft Project/Powerproject and design collaboration tools
  • Strong understanding of construction practices, building regulations, and design coordination
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and leadership skills
  • Able to confidently engage with stakeholders at all levels
  • Highly organized with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to analyse and interpret contractual documents.
  • Flexibility and ability to adapt to a changing environment are essential.
