Job Description
The Opportunity
A brilliant opportunity has opened for a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join a growing team delivering major Data Centre projects across the UK and Europe.
With a strong and steadily expanding pipeline - from hyperscale builds up to 100MW, to upgrade programmes in live operational facilities, this role gives you the platform to step into a senior role within a team that's scaling carefully and intentionally. You'll be working directly with some of the biggest global data centre operators (under NDA), shaping innovative, resilient mechanical design solutions across mission-critical environments.
Based in their London office, you'll enjoy hybrid working, a collaborative culture, and plenty of room to grow your project leadership skills alongside your technical expertise.
About the Role
As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, you'll take ownership of mechanical building services design across a wide variety of data centre projects - from concept through detailed design, advisory reports, feasibility studies, and construction support.
You'll be deeply involved in mechanical systems such as cooling plant, air movement strategies, chilled water systems, ventilation, heat rejection solutions, and optimisation of systems for resilience, energy efficiency, and uptime.
You'll collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams and play a key role in ensuring quality outcomes, client satisfaction, and engineering excellence.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead mechanical engineering design and coordination across multiple data centre projects.
- Produce detailed reports, calculations, design layouts, specifications, and scopes of work.
- Represent the company at client meetings, design reviews, and technical workshops.
- Develop robust mechanical solutions including cooling plant, ventilation systems, CRAH/CRAC configurations, chilled water networks, and heat rejection plant.
- Review existing data centre infrastructure to identify upgrade, optimisation, and expansion opportunities.
- Ensure all deliverables comply with statutory regulations, industry standards, and client requirements.
- Coordinate mechanical systems with electrical, structural, architectural, and external project teams.
- Guide, support, and mentor junior engineers to strengthen the wider team's technical capability.
- Assist with project resourcing, deadlines, and deliverables alongside Project Managers.
- Maintain commercial awareness by identifying risks, variations, and opportunities for additional services.
About You
You'll thrive in this Senior Mechanical Design Engineer role if you bring:
- A degree in Mechanical Engineering (or related discipline).
- 5-10+ years of mechanical building services design experience, ideally including data centre or mission-critical environments.
- Strong technical understanding of cooling technologies, heat rejection systems, ventilation strategies, and mechanical plant selection.
- Experience working through RIBA design stages and delivering complex, high-value projects.
- Confidence working autonomously while collaborating across multidisciplinary teams.
- Excellent communication, organisation, and problem-solving abilities.
- Strong client-facing presence and ability to explain technical concepts clearly.
- Working knowledge of BIM/CAD workflows and model coordination processes.
- Familiarity with electrical systems or public health engineering is an advantage.
Why This Mechanical Design Engineer Role Stands Out
- Work with major global data centre clients with projects across the UK and in Europe.
- Join a growing but close-knit engineering team with a strong technical reputation.
- Enjoy a hybrid working pattern in a central London office near multiple key stations.
- Opportunities to develop project-management skills and step into project leadership roles.
- Exposure to complex, cutting-edge mechanical engineering challenges.
- Be part of a company that's scaling sensibly - not rushing growth, but doing it right.
If this sounds like the next step you're ready to take, we'd love to hear from you.
