Senior Estimator

Position Summary:
Complete quotes in an accurate and timely manner to attain companies close ratio goal.
Responsible for the coordination of project budgeting, including preparing take offs,
obtaining subtrade pricing, reviewing historical cost data and ensuring compliance with
scope of work. Offer construction feasibility and value engineering solutions. Maintain and
stay informed of industry materials and labor pricing trends and developments to deliver
accurate and timely estimates for preconstruction, lump sum bids, negotiated bids, value
engineering, general conditions along with general systems studies and
comparisons. Engage in consistent communications with trade partners and team
members. Maintain up-to-date records of bids and manage the prequalification process for
the hiring of trade partners.
Develop the companies estimating department by managing and mentoring Junior Estimator,
and future estimating team members.
Reporting Structure:
Reports to Director Sales and Estimating. Estimator reports to Senior Estimator.
Responsibilities:
The following are the principal responsibilities of the Sr. Estimator:
1. Ensure that the estimating process runs smoothly and efficiently, and client
expectations are exceeded throughout the duration of the project.
2. Accountable to review all details to ensure all quotes submitted are complete,
accurate, and on-time capturing all project scope and trades outlined in provided bid
materials.
3. Review project specifications, including but not limited to RFP, drawings, insurance
and bonding requirements, addendums and specifications to fully understand
project scope, trades and timelines.
4. Attend bid site walks to gain a full understanding of project scope and deliverables.
Collect on-site data for estimates and take offs to ensure clear, detailed information
comes back to the office for finalized estimates.
5. Ensure that drawings and project specifications are sent to subtrades in a timely
manner to ensure subs have sufficient time to provide a complete and accurate
proposal to the company.
6. Manage and mentor Junior Estimator, and any future members of the estimating
team.
Principle Duties:
1. Review all project documents to prepare estimates. Identify inconsistencies or
incomplete information for review with the client to clarify requirements.
2. Perform risk analysis and determine if bids fall within the company's scope of work.
3. Multi-task to manage the estimating of multiple projects of varying complexity
within the required timelines.
4. Strategically identify and align the most qualified subtrade for a project scope.
5. Obtain, review and level quotes from all required subtrades prior to bid submission.
6. Negotiate with subtrades to ensure best possible price is being presented.
7. Ensure bids are completed on the companies required bid templates and
translated completely and accurately to client required bid format.
8. In coordination with the companies administration team, develop and update bid
template to meet the needs of the estimating department. Bid template is the
standard for which all bids must be completed and saved in company Sharepoint.
9. Communicate bid insurance requirements that do not fall within the companies
current limits to the administration team so quotes can be obtained and
incorporated into bid submission.
10. Assist with estimating and negotiation of change orders where necessary
Qualifications:
1. 5-7+ years experience leading an estimating team focused on ICI projects valued at
$1M and above, with a proven track record of award.
2. Excellent analytical skills, with the ability to interpret complex plans and
specifications putting together accurate estimates.
3. Strong attention to detail and accuracy while working on multiple estimating
projects simultaneously.
4. Ability to multi-task to manage own work, while overseeing direct report.
5. Proficiency with qualifying subcontractor quotes and negotiating pricing.
6. Knowledge of standard construction industry practices, processes and materials.
7. Experience managing direct report(s).
8. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
9. Knowledge and proficiency in PlanSwift and Microsoft Office.
10. Ability to travel to job sites within the Greater Toronto Area as required to complete
estimates.
