Principal Mechanical Engineer – Data Centres

A rapidly expanding engineering consultancy is hiring a Principal Mechanical Engineer to help drive major growth across hyperscale data centre, AI infrastructure, life sciences, and high-tech commercial projects. As a Principal Mechanical Engineer, you’ll take ownership of mechanical building services delivery for complex data centre projects, leading from concept through commissioning. You’ll manage project teams, mentor engineers, interface with major clients, and help shape best practice in mission-critical mechanical engineering.

What you’ll be doing

  • As a Principal Mechanical Engineer, leading end-to-end delivery of mechanical data centre projects

  • Specifying and coordinating HVAC, chilled water, ventilation, and fire protection systems

  • Managing multidisciplinary design teams and developing junior engineers

  • Acting as the primary liaison for clients, contractors, and vendors across design + delivery

  • Producing tender packages, technical reports, performance analysis, and design reviews

  • Overseeing site performance, commissioning, compliance, and quality assurance

  • Managing scope, budgets, contracts, resourcing, and risk across project portfolios

  • Driving innovation and new technology adoption within mission-critical mechanical design

Tech skills they’d love

  • Mechanical building services design for data centres (cooling systems, AHUs, CRAC/CRAH, fire suppression, etc.)

  • Strong knowledge of CIBSE, ASHRAE, BS, IS, EN standards

  • Software exposure: AutoCAD, Revit MEP, Bluebeam, plus analysis tools (e.g. IES, HAP)

  • Experience producing detailed drawings, schematics, schedules, and technical documentation

  • Familiarity with commissioning + systems integration in mission-critical environments

Ideal background

  • 8+ years in mechanical building services engineering

  • Bachelor’s/Master’s in Mechanical Engineering (or similar)

  • Chartered or working towards chartership

  • Experience delivering multimillion-euro MEP projects end-to-end

  • Data centre or mission-critical project experience (3+ years)

  • Knowledge of Irish/EU regulations + LEED/BREEAM is a bonus
