We are seeking a highly experienced Principal Mechanical Design Engineer to support the AMP8 programme for Yorkshire Water under the SPP framework. The Role – Principal Mechanical Design Engineer
As a Principal Mechanical Design Engineer, you will provide technical leadership across multidisciplinary design teams and deliver high-quality mechanical engineering solutions. The Principal Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible for driving design excellence across the AMP8 portfolio while working remotely within a collaborative framework environment.
This is a senior design-focused position, making it ideal for a Principal Mechanical Design Engineer who thrives in technical leadership rather than site management. The successful Principal Mechanical Design Engineer will be involved from concept design through to detailed engineering and construction support.
Key Responsibilities of the Principal Mechanical Design Engineer
As a Principal Mechanical Design Engineer, your responsibilities will include:
- Leading mechanical design delivery across water and wastewater projects as a Principal Mechanical Design Engineer.
- Providing technical leadership and mentoring engineers within the design team.
- Developing and reviewing mechanical designs, specifications, calculations, and drawings.
- Ensuring designs meet UK water industry standards and best practice.
- Collaborating with civil, electrical, process, and project disciplines.
- Supporting design reviews, value engineering, and risk management.
- Engaging with clients and framework partners as a Principal Mechanical Design Engineer.
- Driving innovation and continuous improvement across AMP8 delivery.
Essential Experience for the Principal Mechanical Design Engineer
- Proven experience working as a Principal Mechanical Design Engineer or Senior Mechanical Engineer within the UK water sector.
- Strong technical background in water and wastewater infrastructure design.
- Experience working within AMP frameworks or major UK water utilities.
- Excellent understanding of UK design standards and methodologies.
- Ability to lead technical design and influence engineering decisions.
- Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
Qualifications
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Ideally Chartered Engineer (CEng) or working towards chartership.
- Professional membership (e.g. IMechE) preferred for a Principal Mechanical Design Engineer.
