Contract: Ltd Company
Sector: Water & Wastewater Infrastructure

We are seeking an experienced Design Manager to support the AMP8 programme for United Utilities. This opportunity is ideal for a Design Manager with a strong background in engineering design within the UK water sector, looking to lead and coordinate multidisciplinary design delivery across major infrastructure projects.

The Role – Design Manager

As a Design Manager, you will provide leadership across multidisciplinary design teams and ensure the successful delivery of high-quality engineering solutions throughout the AMP8 programme. You will be responsible for managing multidiscipline teams including civil, mechanical, electrical, and process engineers, ensuring coordinated and technically robust design outputs.

This is a design-focused role rather than a site-based position, making it ideal for a Design Manager with strong technical understanding and experience managing engineering design within complex project environments.

Key Responsibilities

As a Design Manager, your responsibilities will include:

  • Managing and coordinating multidisciplinary design teams, including civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, and process disciplines.
  • Leading design reviews and ensuring technical quality, compliance, and consistency across all disciplines.
  • Overseeing design programmes, deliverables, resources, and interfaces between disciplines.
  • Ensuring compliance with UK water industry standards, regulations, and best practice.
  • Supporting value engineering, risk management, and design optimisation activities.
  • Acting as the key technical interface between stakeholders, clients, and framework partners.
  • Driving continuous improvement and innovation across AMP8 design delivery.
  • Ensuring effective collaboration between civil, mechanical, electrical, and process teams.

Essential Experience

  • Proven experience as a Design Manager, Principal Engineer, or Senior Engineer within the UK water sector.
  • Strong technical background in civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, or process engineering.
  • Experience working within AMP frameworks or with major UK water utilities.
  • Excellent understanding of UK design standards, Eurocodes, and engineering methodologies.
  • Proven ability to manage multidiscipline engineering teams and complex design packages.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and stakeholder management skills.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Civil, Structural, Mechanical, Electrical, or related engineering discipline.
  • Ideally Chartered Engineer (CEng) or working towards chartership.
  • Professional membership (e.g. ICE, IStructE, IMechE, IET, or equivalent) preferred.

Why Join?

  • Opportunity to work on the AMP8 programme with United Utilities.
  • Competitive outside IR35 contract rates (£55–£70/hour DOE).
  • Long-term contract potential within a stable framework environment.
  • Hybrid working: remote with 2 days per week based in the Warrington office.
