About the Role

This Project Manager role in Cardiff is focused on delivering civil engineering projects within a rail environment. You will take ownership of schemes from early planning stages through to completion, ensuring projects are delivered safely, on time, and within budget.

You will be working closely with site teams, commercial staff, and senior leadership while also managing relationships with clients and external stakeholders. This role suits someone who has come through a heavy civils background and has solid rail experience, ideally with a good understanding of Network Rail standards.

The role exists due to continued growth and an increasing workload, offering the opportunity to take real ownership of projects and influence delivery.

The key responsibilities for this Project Manager role are:

  • Lead the delivery of civil engineering projects within a rail environment

  • Manage project programmes, resources, and overall delivery strategy

  • Ensure all health, safety, and environmental standards are met and promoted

  • Oversee project teams including engineers, supervisors, and subcontractors

  • Coordinate with clients, local authorities, and internal stakeholders

  • Monitor project costs, forecasts, and value with commercial teams

  • Identify and manage project risks and implement mitigation plans

  • Ensure quality standards and compliance across all project activities

  • Manage contracts and ensure obligations are met

  • Produce and present regular progress and financial reports

Experience required for this Project Manager role are:

  • Minimum 10 years experience within civil engineering

  • At least 5 years experience working within the rail sector

  • Proven experience as a Project Manager or Site Agent

  • Strong background in heavy civils projects

  • SMSTS qualification

  • PTS certification

Desirable knowledge, skills and experience for this Project Manager role are:

  • Understanding of Network Rail and Transport for Wales standards

  • Knowledge of NEC4 or other standard forms of contract

  • Experience working towards or holding a professional qualification

  • Strong commercial awareness and cost management experience

  • Ability to mentor and develop junior team members
