Plumbing Designer

Our client is a multidisciplinary firm that is currently seeking a self-motivated, hardworking Plumbing Designer.  This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is looking to gain valuable hands-on work experience in a dynamic, team-based working environment, as well as grow and develop their professional career in the consulting industry.

Primary Objective: Responsible for the development and management of assigned project work during all phases, from inception through planning, design and construction, in accordance with the project scope, schedule and budget.

Responsibilities: The Responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to the following:

  • Design and lay out of engineering drawings within Plumbing specialty.
  • Complete Plumbing calculations including water supply, storm, and equipment sizes.
  • Design Plumbing systems including sanitary waste, vent, storm, domestic water distribution systems, and purified water systems.
  • Design medical gas systems, compressed air and natural gas systems.
  • Designs, selects, schedules, sizes and specifies basic Plumbing system components to include plumbing fixtures, drains, and equipment.
  • Design and select fire protection systems and equipment.
  • Specifies portions of the engineering system from manufacturer’s data and works to avoid the expense of inventing new designs.
  • Understands and applies Provincial and Municipal model codes as related to buildings and Plumbing design.
  • Assists in preparing quantity and construction cost estimates as requested.
  • Works to meet design schedules and complete tasks on budget.
  • Assists in the review of shop drawing submittals as requested and posts modifications as needed.
  • Assists in developing and maintaining Plumbing project schedules and budgets.
  • Assists in developing and maintaining project work plan and monitors team progress.
  • Assist with field work assignments.
  • Should continually review processes and make recommendations for improvement.
  • Carries out specific client development strategies as assigned by Marketing such as providing leads to management when possible. 
  • Attend meetings to coordinate drawings and resources, determine project criteria and provide information
  • Lead junior design staff throughout all phases of project
  • Share expert knowledge of current plumbing, fire protection, compressed air and medical gas design techniques, building systems, design trends and developments to improve the technical skills of the team and ensures they are implemented on project work
  • Escalate resource issues to the appropriate Project Manager
  • Review architectural and structural drawings
  • Work with contractors and respond to technical inquiries
  • Provide technical and administrative support through all phases of the project
  • Help establish and promote client relationships
  • Strive to ensure quality and timely delivery of finished products to clients
  • Overtime as required

Qualifications, Experience and Education:

  • 7-10 years experience as a plumbing designer on large design systems in a consulting engineering environment
  • Have successfully completed related post-secondary education
  • Is proficient in Microsoft Office (i.e. Excel and Outlook) and experienced using Engineering software including AutoCAD and Revit.
  • Is well versed in the relevant sections of the OBC, OPC, NBC, NPC, CSA Z317 series, including the preparation of load calculations and pipe sizing for domestic water, storm and sanitary drainage and sprinkler systems
  • Possess experience in project management and project delivery and in providing direction to other members of the Engineering team
  • Demonstrate an ability to collaborate with other professional disciplines
  • CET certification is required.
