Assistant Quantity Surveyor / Estimator
Location: Birmingham - 2-3 days in office / 1 day on site / 1-2 days from home
Salary: £35,000 plus car allowance
The Opportunity..
A well-established construction and engineering company is seeking a commercially minded professional to join its Birmingham office. With annual turnover exceeding £100m, this is an excellent opportunity for someone with a background in quantity surveying and /or estimating, who is looking for a varied role with long-term progression opportunities.
The successful candidate will report directly to the Commercial Manager and work closely with site and procurement teams, with key responsibilities including:

Work alongside the procurement team to develop and maintain a centralised pricing database for estimating purposes.

Support account management and design teams in preparing customer schedules of rates (SORs) and estimate sheets.

Assist project managers in identifying and managing project variations, including costing, submissions, approvals, and maintaining variation accounts.

Prepare monthly applications for payment, including materials on site and completed works.

Review project costs against tender allowances and identify over/underspend trends.

Record and analyse commercial data to support future pricing and project performance reviews.

Support project managers with preparation and agreement of final accounts.

Maintain and monitor final account trackers, ensuring deadlines are achieved.

Provide contractual support by reviewing JCT amendments and identifying commercial implications such as payment terms and liquidated damages.

Carry out detailed cost analysis on competitive tenders to support future commercial strategy and decision-making.
Key Requirements..

Previous experience in quantity surveying or estimating, ideally within construction or engineering.

Knowledge of JCT contracts would be advantageous.

Excellent attention to detail and strong organisational skills.

Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.

Educated to a high standard in a relevant subject (HNC/D, NVQ, Degree).

Driving licence is essential.
